Male Breast Reduction

Also known as correction of gynecomastia or mastectomy for gynecomastia, the procedure involves using several techniques that reduce breast size and flatten and enhance the chest contour. The type of procedure or combination of procedures that are used will depend on the size of the breasts, the degree of sagging (if any) and the consistency of the breast tissue (fatty or glandular). Often times, correction can be achieved with liposuction alone. Some patients require excision of the dense glandular tissue using an incision along the lower margin of the areola.

Gynecomastia may affect one breast or both. Adolescent boys may benefit from the surgery although additional procedures may be needed in the future if breast development continues. In men who have lost a significant amount of weight, removal of breast tissue and skin as well as nipple/areola repositioning may be necessary in order to achieve the desired result.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. It is common in adolescent boys and 90% of the time symptoms disappear following adolescence. Persistence of gynecomastia or development of the condition in adulthood can be the result of hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, obesity, disease or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia often causes embarrassment, emotional discomfort and can impair self-confidence. Some men even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
